Ramen (RAH-MEN) is a popular Japanese noodle dish that has its origins in China. The origin of ramen has been a mystery, as no one really knows of when Ramen was first introduced to Japan. At first, ramen were usually called “Chuuka Soba”, or “shina soba”(Soba, in Japanese, means thin noodles), emphasizing that it was a type of thin noodle, that was introduced from China. At the turn of the 20th century, many Chinese restaurants in Japan served ramen as an inexpensive meal. A it became more popular, vendors began to bring Ramen in by cart to sell in commercial districts along with gyoza (Chinese dumplings). As time passed on, ramen became a standard eating-out delicacy into the middle of the 20th century. By the 1980s, other than sushi, ramen had become an international Japanese cultural icon.
