Description
Centre for Ayurveda & Indian Systems of Healing Education (CAISH) federally registered Not for Profit is one of its kind in North America. Ismat Nathani conceived the vision of a centre offering traditional East Indian medicine as a whole, integrated with modalities of other eastern & western holistic arts & sciences, in 2002.
Indian medicine is based on Vedic doctrines, traditions, culture, philosophy & practices of ancient Indian civilization that have a history of more than 5000 years.
Throughout the centuries, Indian medicine has evolved and contributed to the advancement in treating & preventing disease. Indeed, it has influenced many medical sciences such as Hippocratic (Greek) medicine, Chinese medicine, Arabic medicine & modern surgery.
Today what we know of Indian medicine includes Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga and other natural & drugless therapies. This knowledge has been passed down over time either through scholarly written texts, verbal teachings of sages & philosophers or through the practices of Vaidyas (physicians). Much of this art and knowledge, which includes Ayurveda & Yoga, has been restored & is currently widely practiced in India. Other elements of Indian medicine, including Siddha & Naturopathy (prakriti chikitsa), are also acknowledged and are accessible in more localized areas of India. Some of these ancient healing arts have been completely eradicated, whereas other therapies have been suppressed and forgotten over time such as, Marma therapy (marma chikitsa), Neurotherapy (nadi vigyan), Acupuncture (suchi karma) & Bone-setting (haadvaid). There are various historical & political reasons for the negligence in preserving Indian medicine in its entirety. The limitations of conventional medicine in the areas of prevention of disease and maintenance of health have inspired and even necessitated the search for alternatives to health care in the form of traditional medical systems. More & more effort is being made today to understand, preserve & restore traditional medicine in general, and the contribution of Indian Medicine is at the forefront.
The Centre for Ayurveda & Indian System of Healing (CAISH) aims to serve the purpose of creating an opportunity to understand & experience Indian medicine in the West. CAISH also attempts to bridge the gap between the restored & lost arts of Indian Systems of Healing.
