Description
Cells for Life are a Canadian company that has been offering cord blood storage services for the citizens of Canada over the last 18 years. The facility is located within the Toronto general hospital, effectively becoming the one and only cords blood deposit sitting inside a hospital. The premises are always under tight security to ensure the safety of samples while in storage. The company goes even further on the issue of security by using underground tunnels to transport samples to different treatment venues. Since Dr. Michael Virro launched it in 1997, the company has overseen a storage capacity of over 43,000 samples.
Cord blood is considered a remedy for many afflictions as proven by science. Cells for Life encourage new mothers to register for their cord samples to be obtained, an activity which must start at the delivery bed. After the parent signs up, the blood is processed. Experts at the company use their experience and the technology available to gauge the condition of each specific sample. No fee is charged by the company until the blood has been processed, after which a fixed amount of money is paid. The next step involves the signing of a contract. In the contract, the parent agrees to allow the facility to keep the blood for a period of at most 18 years. Other important provisions of the contract will vary from one parent to the next but the skeleton is usually the same.
Cells for Life levies a fixed fee for every sample and this fee can be paid yearly or as a full package. Those who provide referrals to friends and family pay a little less than the rest of the clients. There is always a guarantee that the fee per year would not change for 18 years. In the case where a client fails to pay up despite constant reminders, their sample is either destroyed or used for the purposes of research (this varies from a client to the next, according to the terms of the contract).
A client can always obtain their sample in case there is a medical need. When the child from whose cord the blood was obtained, gets to their age of 18, Cells for Life meets with the client and both parties transfer of the ownership of the sample to the child.
The facility has huge storage tanks that come equipped with the latest technologies, a factor that helps keep their samples fresh for as long as possible.
