Description
Located in the Wolf Willow shopping centre at 170th Street and 60th Avenue, Moshe’s Laffa is a new venture for local jewelry store owner, Eva Nielsen, and her life and business partner, Moshe Hazan, a cook.
Hazan is a recent arrival from Israel where he has a restaurant, says Nielsen. He noticed there wasn’t a kosher meat restaurant in Edmonton and decided to remedy that situation, setting up a small, 24-seat, six-table eatery in a shopping centre right beside Beth Israel synagogue.
The restaurant serves Israeli foods including shwarma, ground beef kebabs and hand-made hummus (made with ingredients such as pine nuts, ground beef and mushrooms). Hazan makes his own laffa, an Israeli flatbread, from scratch in a special Israeli-style, gas-fired oven known as a taboon. Another specialty is sabich – an eggplant concoction served in a fresh laffa (which is also known as taboon bread).
The restaurant is open from Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when it closes for shabbat, the sabbath, opening again on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nielsen says they welcome in-house dining, and take-out as well.
“It’s a cozy little place,” says Nielsen. “(Moshe) has his own secret recipes that he doesn’t reveal to anybody.”
Moshe’s Laffa is at 6803-170 Street. Call 780-489-7719.
