The City of Barrie is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. Barrie was named in 1833 after Sir William Barrie, who was in charge of the naval forces in Canada and frequently commanded forces through the city and along the Nine Mile Portage.
Barrie's historic downtown area is situated in a distinct curved or wrapped valley, surrounding the western edge of Kempenfelt Bay. There are many ski hills and snowmobile trails nearby for the avid outdoorsman and walking trails throughout the city for hiking. The Spirit Catcher, situated on Barrie’s waterfront, was designed by Ron Baird for the 1986 EXPO in Vancouver. It was moved from there to the Barrie waterfront.
